Career Exploration

When you are changing jobs or careers, graduating from school, or transitioning from military to civilian jobs, completing a thorough career exploration is essential. The steps to career exploration include:

1. Assess Yourself

Take a self assessment using the Employ Florida Marketplace.  You can identify the skills that you have and match them with a career or occupation that suits you. Then review the jobs that employers that are currently hiring say match your skills or find training to improve the skills you need to land your ideal job.

  • Take a career assessment from Yahoo! Hot Jobs.

  • Monster.com has a number of interest assessments for use in career exploration.

  • ISeek assessments utilize various interest and personality questionnaires to help you identify the type of environment in which you would prefer to work.

  • The Work Importance Locator will help you learn about your work values and what you think is important about a job.

  • The Princeton Review Career Quiz asks you to answer 24 questions about yourself for a personalized work style and list of related jobs.

  • Self-Directed Search is an interest assessment you can take online in about 15-20 minutes. Your interests are described in 6 categories based on the Holland Interest Inventory. While the test is quick and easy to take, you have to pay about $9 to get the report with your results, a list of careers that fit your interests, and a list of potential courses of study that will prepare you for each career.
